BI101-23: Lesson 23 - Introduction to Journals

Archived prerequisite class BI101-23 at Becker Professional Theology Academy that introduces the importance of scholarly journal articles to refresh new learning opportunities and more perfect Scripture handling.

Academic Journals are extended scholarly writings by experts and scholars that are published in magazine style issues. Usually, religious academic journals are “peer reviewed” which means that the article are publically evaluated by experts in the field. The published articles that receive strong support for scholastic advancement are then used by other scholars to reach new directions of scholarly advancement by building good scholarship atop reliable, supported scholarly journal articles.

Those journal articles that contain error seldom make it past editorial review and remain unpublished. However, should an academic journal article be published with error or sloppy word usage, professional scorn will disregard or ridicule the article, and the author professionally discredited. This professional peer review of journal articles in public forums and higher educational institutions adds a great deal of value to academic journals; for this reason, academic journals are highly reliable in the evaluation of worldviews connected to the Bible and it's times.

Becker Academy requires citations from Academic Journal articles in most graded papers. More importantly, Professional Theologists regularly use them in their preparation for study or for published articles that require recent scholarship to advance the Word of God with deeper applications. LOGOS has a great collection of Academic Journals, and it seems at least three or four new journals are added to their vast collection early. Becker Academy students will also receive access to EBESCO, which is a database and full article access to many of the top religious journals. Finally, smart Professional Theologists participate in important religious organizations and receive quarterly journals associated to each. A list of some of the most recognized religious Academic Journals is provided to guide you to the existence and availability of these important resources.

Dr. Heiser commends Academic Journals as excellent resources written by expert specialists to specialists in the religious world in a format that allows authors enough word count to fully explain their position. He points out that while many worldview references are limited to just a few paragraphs, Academic Journals reward their professional authors with extra space for their words [1]. That characteristic of abundant word usage is part of the high scholarship respect given these excellent resources. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, magazines and trade journals all limit the amount of word space available making Academic Journals the goto reference for new and detailed articles of scholarship.

(See attached list at Becker Professional Theology Academy online for important religious and philosophical journals that are published and available to most EBSCO hosts today)
